jazz and funk dance

Jazz dance emerged out of the theatrical styles performed on Broadway and in West End musicals; it was the key ingredient in many Hollywood musical films and TV variety programs throughout the 20th Century. From Vaudeville to Bollywood, shows that encompassed and augmented jazz dance are Cabaret, Chicago, West Side Story, Sweet Charity, A Chorus Line, Fame, Flashdance and Moulin Rouge.

Funk surfaced as it own dance style at the end of the 20th century, but has recently been caught in the jazz net. Related to Hip-Hop, it typifies moves generated during the choreography of music video clips & DVD's. The biggest influences came from L.A. Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Kylie Minogue, Brittany Spears, Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake and many pop groups have used the latest funky moves in their video clips.

Dancentre students get the best of both worlds by learning the established basics of jazz technique as well as the more recent funk vocabulary, through to free-stylin'; and can be assessed in both the Dancentre International curriculum and the SFD Jazz syllabus.
